Welcome to the eMAMA Post Graduate Training Programme for Maternal Mental Health in Sub-Saharan Africa


About the programme

This course is part of a collaborative initiative between universities and healthcare institutions in Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Europe, supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. The aim is to strengthen the capacity of healthcare professionals and educators to recognize, assess, and manage maternal mental health challenges, especially during the perinatal period.

Programme structure

The programme offers four sequential modules totaling 30 ECTS credits:

  • Three modules of 5 ECTS each
  • One advanced module of 15 ECTS

Each module will be accessible on its start date and builds upon previous learning. You will not be able to access modules before their official start dates.

Learning approach

Our teaching methods include interactive e-learning, case-based learning, mobile application use (eMAMA app), and engagement with real-world best practices tailored to Sub-Saharan African contexts.

As a participant, you will:

  • Develop a strong foundation in maternal mental health knowledge and prevention strategies
  • Gain skills in digital tools and innovative teaching/learning methods
  • Learn from cross-country experiences and international best practices
  • Collaborate with peers and professionals across diverse settings

  • Module 1: Fundamentals of Perinatal Mental Health (5 ECTS)

    • Opens: June 1, 2025
    • Closes: July 6, 2025
    • Covers core concepts, common disorders, risk factors, and preventive approaches

  • Module 2: Assessment and Screening for Maternal Mental Health (5 ECTS)

    • Opens: July 7, 2025
    • Closes: August 10, 2025
    • Focuses on evidence-based screening tools and assessment strategies

  • Module 3: Interventions and Treatment Approaches (5 ECTS)

    • Opens: August 11, 2025
    • Closes: September 14, 2025
    • Explores culturally appropriate interventions and care models

  • Module 4: Integration and Application (15 ECTS)

    • Opens: September 15, 2025
    • Closes: November 23, 2025
    • Synthesizes learning through practical application and project work

Each module includes varied assessment methods designed to be practical and applicable to your professional context:

  • Weekly knowledge quizzes
  • Discussion participation
  • Case analyses
  • Final integrative assignments
